“Goa sarkar ki jai” slogans rent the air around the Navelim indoor stadium “ the makeshift centre
for the homeless migrants stranded on account of the 21-day lockdown.
On a day when the district authorities distributed mattresses to the migrants housed at the indoor
stadium, and District Collector South Ajit Roy accompanied by Margao Municipal Chief Officer
Ajit Panchwadkar and Salcete Mamlatdar Prataprao Gaonkar descended on the centre, the
migrants shouted slogans in appreciation of the Goa government for looking after their needs.
Around 220 mattresses have been provided at the shelter on Saturday and the balance mattresses
for the 450 persons are expected to come in the next few days.
The District Collector’s visit to the centre for the homeless comes following reports that all is
now well a the centre.
Margao Municipal Council Chief Officer AjitPanchwadkar informed that the 450 migrants
housed at the stadium have been provided with 20 mobile toilets, in addition to the six toilets
inside the complete. “We have made available showers for the inmates. Every alternate days,
doctors examine the inmates to ensure they do not suffer from any diseases”, Panchwadkar said.
He pointed out that the government has provided 220 mattresses for the inmates, adding that balance lot will come in a day or two.
